Benefits of joining

An important aim for many young engineers would be to achieve chartered status; CEng, as soon as possible. There are many requirements to be met in order to demonstrate the competence and commitment to the engineering profession necessary for the esteemed CEng title. Of which, the knowledge, understanding and application of knowledge sections (category A and B) account for a large portion of the necessary requirements.

Being in the company of experts in the various technical areas, presents a great resource for understanding the current technological advancements in the field as well as for the development of one's own technical understanding. After all, as they say, ‘to stand on the shoulders of giants' would enable us to make greater advancements and progress. Through participation in the working groups, it will allow you to build on the past experience and expertise of more senior experts. There are great learning and development benefits through interacting with such experts. This would fit in directly with core competency A , where you are to demonstrate the ability to understand technical knowledge and developments deeper than an undergraduate.

Working Group members belong to a very international fraternity; coming from all manner of countries, and they encompass a wide spectrum of experts both in technical and commercial areas. Joining the working group would allow you to have direct interactions with such experts and allow for a better understanding of developments not just in the local market but of the international community as well. This would allow you to gain an understanding of not just the technical aspects but also the commercial aspects and how it pertains to different business areas; going hand in hand with core competency B .

Of course, the NGN understand that it can be daunting for a young engineer to be in such esteem company. Hence, the mentoring program which seeks to make the process more seamless and a little less intimidating is a great opportunity for professional development and to make CEng that much more quicker.

Being part of the Cigré working group is also relevant if you are in the academia doing research. It presents a platform where you can get feedback on your research ideas as experts from both academia and the industry would be in the working group. This feedback can prove to be invaluable to researchers. In addition, you would be at the forefront of novel technology and innovation and can help a great deal in formulating research ideas and methodology.
