Synopsis: "HVDC"
HVDC transmission has a long history in the UK, since DC has been playing an important role
in ensuring power transfers between the British grid and its overseas neighbours. The number of novel DC connection projects currently under realisation or discussed shows that DC will
continue to be an important topic to power engineers. This event is an opportunity to learn
more about the Moyle interconnector system, i.e. the 500 MW subsea cable system connecting
Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
This event will take place on the day preceding the Cigré UK / ROI joint meeting “Low carbon
energy systems” (http://www.cigre.org/gb/events/RM.asp) which will be held on the 24 April in
Belfast (note: a registration fee applies to this event – a subsidy is available to NGN members)
Review to follow.

Location: Didcot Power Station
Resources: Click here
Synopsis: "The Future of Power - Carbon Capture"
With the retirement of the UK's aging Nuclear fleet and also the European Large Combustion Plant Directive forcing the closure of thousands of megawatts of coal, how are the energy companies preparing to plug the impending energy gap in a secure, cost effective and low carbon way? These themes were explored at the next CIGRE NGN Technical Event held at Didcot Power Station. The event comprised of a number of technical presentations from industry experts followed by a tour of both Didcot A Power Station, a 2000MW coal fired station, and Didcot B Power Station (combined cycle gas turbine). nPower's Commercial Asset Management Team discussed the options of building new stations and their Research & Development Team outlined the progress being made in the field of carbon capture.
This event also hosted the NGN Annual General Meeting. This included brief update on the NGN by Chaiman Jonathan Halliday and outline the proposed structure of NGN. Election of the necessary NGN roles where we saw Maria Brucoli become elected for the role of ViceChair / Info Coordinator.
New Roles of responsibility of the NGN:
Chairperson: Jonathan Halliday, Areva T&D
Treasurer / Secretary: Sarah Follmann, Siemens T&D
ViceChair / Info Coordinator: Maria Brucoli, Imperial College London

2008 Technical Event 1: 17th April 2008
Location: London (St John's Wood)
Resources: Click here
Synopsis: 'Providing Power to the City''
Demand for power continues to increase throughout the UK, but in London, the growth rate is twice that of the national average. Completed in 2005, St John's Wood Substation was constructed as a termination point for National Grids £200m 20km cable tunnel carrying 400kV cable circuits from Elstree Substation (Herefordshire) to the heart of London 's West End . The 400kV circuits from Elstree feed a 400kV indoor compact gas insulated switchgear substation, the largest of its kind in Britain . Four 240 MVA autotransformers, weighing no less than 171 tonnes each, transform the voltage from 400kV to 132kV for localised distribution to the Distribution Network Operator for London. Delivering a project of such scale in the heart of London's West End is feat of engineering.
CIGRÉ NGN was invited by National Grid to host our first technical event at the St John's Wood Substation. The aim of the event was to gain an appreciation of the issues surrounding delivery of ever increasing amounts of power to the centre of large cities. NGN Members had the opportunity to hear views from well respected speakers from CIGRÉ, National Grid and ABB through a number of presentations, before being taken on a guided tour of St John's Wood Substation. To round the day off, a Q&A session was held to allow NGN Members to ask any final questions.
Review: The sun was shining for NGN's first Technical Event, which involved a guided tour around the state of the art London substation and three informative talks. The first discussed the problems with delivering bulk power into major cities by use of tunnels and underground cables by Colin Ray (CIGRE-UK), followed by a specialised talk about London 's unique power infrastructure by Ben Marshall (National Grid), which lead nicely onto details of St. John's Wood substation, presented by Mike Swan (ABB).
Feedback from those who attended was very positive, the quality of the presentations was especially praised and the opportunity to have a guided tour around the venue was described as “most valuable”.
To finish off the day an evening networking dinner was held in Covent Garden and was enjoyed by all attendees. If you didn't manage to attend this event then please keep your eyes and ears open for the next one, provisionally booked for late June. CIGRÉ (UK) NGN Launch Event: 4th October 2007
Location: RBS Williams F1 Conference Centre, Grove Oxfordshire.
Resources: Click Here
Synopsis: The launch event was organised to introduce the NGN members to the many experts in the industry and to become formally recognised by CIGRÉ-UK. The evening was a mix of networking events and technical presentations with presenters including Sam Micahael (Technical Director of Williams F1), Chris Jones (Chairman of CIGRÉ-UK), Jean Kowal (Secretary General CIGRÉ), Nick Winser (National Grid), Karen Wilds (ABB), Nick Jenkins (Manchester University), Adam Middleton (Executive Member CIGRÉ-UK) and various NGN members.
NGN Article in ELECTRA No 236 – February 2008: CIGRE-UK have introduced a new section within their organisation for new engineers, the section is called NGN (Next Generation Network). The CIGRE-UK Executive decided that the NGN members should be allowed to govern their own activities and a NGN steering committee was formed. The total number of NGN members is now around 100, some from Universities and some from industry. They are in the process of drafting their own constitution and drafting their own documentation to explain and promote CIGRE.
On 4 th October 2007 an event was organised to formally launch this new section, it was held at the Williams Formula 1 research and engineering centre near Oxford . The event was attended by many of the NGN members, a number of the UK Collective members and Jean Kowal. The event was designed to be a relaxed fun occasion where all could get to know each other, the Williams venue was the perfect atmosphere. A number of posters were arranged which explained the key services that CIGRE-UK NGN will be offering to its members including:
Making it easier for NGN members to be involved in technical working groups
Setting up a coaching and mentoring scheme to NGN members
Giving NGN members a way to contribute to the PARIS 2008 General Symposium
Jean Kowal outlined the structure of CIGRE illustrating that it covers all parts of the electrical industry operating through a framework of study committees, working groups and conferences/symposia to examine issues relevant to the industry, some of the current topics being energy supply, efficient use of assets, new technologies and sustainable systems. He stressed that NGN members are encouraged to join and become involved in all areas of CIGRE, they will bring a fresh view and help maintain the high quality of CIGRE work. He supported a NGN event at the Paris session and will work with CIGRE-UK to arrange something for the 2008 session which will assist in promoting this initiative throughout other CIGRE National Committees. A number of the Collective members gave their view and vision of the power industry illustrating that we are at a stage in which key decisions made over the next few years will shape the industry for many years and the NGN members have a role to play in this.
Some of the NGN members then expressed their view of the way forward. Beatrice Chong from Warwick University proposed a possible event for CIGRE's Paris Session for 2008, proposing a technical poster presentation session to promote the existing talent that NGN members have. The suggested theme was “Power System Networks for the 21 st Century and Beyond”, it was a purposely broad theme to encompass the myriad of work currently being covered by NGN members from both industry and University. Although not finalised it is clear that the aims of the NGN event at Paris 2008 are to publicise the NGN, attract and encourage NGN involvement and pave the way for future NGN events at Paris for the UK and global NGN groups to address CIGRE's need to attain more new engineers.
In a presentation by Vera Silva from Imperial College London it was emphasized that given the large number of CIGRE technical working groups, there is considerable scope for NGN members to be involved. Drawing on her own experiences she emphasized the benefits of having access to these unique technical resources along with outlining the many ways in which a less experienced member of CIGRE can contribute to the WG process. The NGN group plans to establish a mentoring and coaching scheme, details of the proposed scheme were outlined by John McDonald from Imperial College London and it is expected that the scheme will be up and running early in 2008.
